The worst thing about this movie — I mean, other than the fact that it’s a movie about women reading Jane Austen, HOLY CHRIST, WHY DID THIS HAVE TO HAPPEN? — is the part where Grigg’s character is going on and on about how he lived such a female-dominated childhood because of his older sisters, and how he tried to escape through sci-fi, but OOPS, turns out that genre is actually completely dominated by women! Because Ursula K. LeGuin, you know.
Like, fuck you, dude. I am an unapologetic lover of science fiction, but I am not going to pretend it isn’t a male-dominated (often misogynistic) space. Especially not through a manipulative speech meant to charm the object of my affections.
